Sunderland AFC 1894/95

___________________________________________________

In advance of the 1894/95 season Sunderland held their annual meeting 2 august 1894 at the queens’ hotel, Fawcett Street, with Mr R Thompson presiding. Tom Watson presented his annual report and it was unanimously accepted. WT Wallace presented a financial statement which showed receipts for the year of £6232. Expenditure on wages totalled £3358, travelling expenses were £978. All in all £56 was left at the bank. Due to business commitments Thompson reluctantly resigned his office. Councillor JP Henderson was elected Club President in his place.

For the 3rd time in 4 seasons, Sunderland would be League champions, remaining unbeaten at home, scoring 80 goals in 30 league games.

Andrew McCreadie and Harry Johnston were new additions to the first team, the former joining from Glasgow Rangers. He replaced Auld at centre half although he was only 5 ft 5in tall.

The season started 1 September with an 8 v 0 rout of Derby County at Newcastle Road, Campbell netting a hat trick. The performance had exceeded expectations. The Sunderland line-up for the first game showed some changes: Doig, Meehan, Gow, Wilson, McCreadie, Johnstone, Gillespie, Millar, Hislop, Campbell, Hislop, Hannah

This game was very bizarre. The red and whites started the game in a match officiated by the "Deputy Referee", the original having been delayed en route. He had missed his railway connection at York railway station. Leading 3 v 0 at half time Sunderland learnt of the original referees’ arrival and to the Wearsiders amazement he ordered the game to be restarted.

The "second half" saw the Lads roar into a 3 v 0 lead, and after the "third half" they had scored 8. The match caused a major headache for the watching pressmen, who had already filed their half time reports at the end of the first 45 minutes. It is not known how they retrieved the situation, although some embarrassment was obviously caused. The match is remembered as "The Game of Three Halves". Technically 11 v 0

As part of the McCreadie deal Sunderland took on Rangers at Ibrox and played out an entertaining 1 v 1 draw with the Scottish Cup holders in front of 5,000 people. Onto Gallowgate where Sunderland defeated Newcastle United 4 v 1 in a friendly. This was a bad start for the Tyneside team who had also gone down 0 v 5 to Darwen in their previous game.

The next 3 league matches were all won, including a triumph at Aston Villa. Sunderland paid their first visit to filbert Street 17 September, 2 days after the Villa game, and defeated Leicester Fosse 3 v 0 in a friendly.

24 November saw the visit of Liverpool to Newcastle Road, with the press commenting that "the record of the Liverpool side is about the worst in the league". How times would change.

5 December saw Sunderland play the Rest of the League at the Westoe Ground, South Shields in a benefit match for the widow and family of NJ Ross. It is worth noting the opposition side: Hillman (Burnley), Crabtree (Burnley), Holmes (PNE), McCartney (Liverpool), Saunders (PNE), Cunningham (PNE), Ross (Liverpool), Goodall (Derby), Deckton (PNE), Drummond (Liverpool)

By the turn of the year Sunderland had dished out some thrashings; Queens Park 8 v 1; small Heath (Birmingham City) 7 v 1, but the biggest was reserved for the English Cup. Fairfield were the opponents. Sunderland then defeated Preston North end and Bolton Wanderers and for the 3rd time in their history were into the semi finals.

However Aston Villa defeated Sunderland, t Blackburn 1 v 2, and would inflict 3 FA cup defeats in 4 seasons, including 1894/95, twice in semi finals. This would prove a mixed blessing for the Football Association. After Villas' 1895 FA cup triumph the trophy was put on display in a shoe shop, promptly stolen, and later it turned out that it was melted down to make counterfeit half crowns.

Back to league action and Everton were running neck and neck with Sunderland; although in the end 5 points would separate the 2 sides. One of the penultimate league games of the season was against Liverpool on Merseyside. Sunderland stayed at Southport in preparation, would win 3 v 2. The Scouse side had in their ranks a certain player called McCartney.

The championship was eventually secured on 13 April, with a 3 v 0 win at turf Moor. 2 from Hannah and one from Gillespie doing the business.

With the holiday period now upon Sunderland and the championship sown up we could afford to relax. That we did with a home game against Queens Park, the only thing was we were so laid back we were nearly horizontal and succumbed to a 3 v 4 defeat,

The last league game was at home to Everton and Sunderland duly triumphed 2 v 1. It was a performance worthy of praise. The Merseyside team were at full strength whereas the last few games had seen Sunderland pick up injuries. We were well below strength. 20,000 watched the game, which had originally been postponed from 30 March.

27 April 1895 saw Sunderland become "World Champions". With Heart of Midlothian current Scottish champions and Sunderland of course English winners the red and whites travelled to Edinburgh for a game billed as "the championship of the World". The Sunderland team left shortly after 8am and arrived in the Scottish Capital at 12.45pm. Sunderland lunched at the Douglas hotel and prior to the 4 o'clock kick off took a stroll.

The weather was poor, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of 10,000 people. The game was an absolute cracker and Sunderland triumphed 5 v 3. The red and white scorers were Johnstone; Campbell got a brace, Harvie and Millar.

The season ended in triumph for the "A" team as well as the firsts. Jarrow, Hebburn Argyle, Southwick were all defeated. It had been a long and hard season but it had been successful.
